VOLUNTEER OPTIONS

Volunteer with us in 2025!

We are exited to announce that our on-site volunteer program is now open for 2025! At Muzanga Foundation, we welcome volunteers ready to work hand in hand with people in Zambia’s rural communities. As a volunteer, you’ll be part of our Muzanga Family and together we make a lasting impact through sustainable projects.

Our key projects for 2025

  • The Muzanga Hub: Our largest project, the Muzanga Hub, is a 2-hectare site near the village, supporting around 400 households facing poverty and limited opportunities. This HUB features buildings and spaces for education, sustainable farming, crafts, and community activities, all aimed at improving local quality of life.
  • Green fingers: This project trains local farmers in climate-smart agriculture. Under the guidance of local experts, farmers learn techniques to enhance food security, build healthy soils, and promote environmental conservation. Education is crucial for adapting to climate change and ensuring a sustainable future.
  • Hands and horizons: This initiative helps young people in the village learn artisan skills through local craft training. It combats poverty and negative behaviors while creating income opportunities. The workshop also hosts tourists during village tours, fostering cultural exchange.
  • Cultural museum: Our museum serves as a platform for intercultural exchange, connecting locals with international visitors. It preserves and shares traditions, stories, and practices, offering educational insights while creating jobs and boosting tourism to generate community income.
  • Village tours: Our village tours provide an authentic look into daily life, guided by locals and our team. Visitors experience community life, learn about traditions, and see our ongoing projects. These tours promote intercultural exchange and directly support local families and initiatives, fostering sustainable tourism.

When we are not working in the communities, we work (and live) at our Muzanga Headquarters, we operate a small but busy campsite for overlanders and organise safaris for our guests. This is not just our office; it’s our home base where we enjoy our time as well. We have our own vegetable gardens, swimming pool, braai areas, fruit gardens, and various creative projects which are always ongoing. There’s always something happening here!

How volunteers can contribute

We believe in learning and creating together. We love to share our knowledge about social innovation and creative interactive research methods, and we would be very happy with your help and knowledge in executing our projects.

There’s a spot for almost everyone willing to lend a hand. We are looking for passionate people who can assist with educational programs, manage our social media, support community gardens and agricultural plots, train farmers in organic farming techniques and water management, facilitate intercultural interactions between locals and visitors, and take on general office work. You can also help organise events, contribute to fundraising efforts, welcome guests at our campsite, maintain communal areas, and decorate/build our headquarters and at our other building sites. There’s so much to do, and we can’t wait to hear what skills you bring to the table!

The most important qualities we value are a willingness to learn, an eagerness to share your knowledge, and an open-minded attitude. You should be ready to work hard alongside our dedicated Zambian staff and researchers. Speaking English is essential, but you don’t have to be fluent!

We’re looking for volunteers between mid-April and November 2025, preferably for four weeks or longer, and ideally 22 years or older. Working hours are from 07:30 to approximately 15:30, with a one-hour lunch break and one or two days off each week, depending on your project assignment.

Accommodation

Staying with us is a unique experience, especially if you love nature, safari’s and wildlife! We live in a rural area, so our lifestyle is pretty basic and outdoorsy. We have solar power and our own water borehole. While we don’t have shopping malls or bars nearby, we do have the most amazing sundowners, safaris, BBQs, and even karaoke nights to enjoy together!

Depending on the time of year and how many volunteers are with us, you will either have a private or shared bow tent. We provide comfortable beds, and there is a shared shower and toilet. The size of the tents may vary based on your stay, but we make sure they’re cozy! We serve three simple local meals a day, and we’re happy to accommodate vegetarians and vegans. If you feel like cooking for yourself, you can use our fridge and a small gas cooker.

Free time & local activities

Please keep in mind that we live in a very rural area with no shops, malls, restaurants, or the typical city amenities. This is rural Zambia, and while we have some nice activities during the high tourist season, you should be prepared to enjoy the nature and wildlife surrounding us. When we are not working, we enjoy going on safari, going for sundowners, relaxing by the fire pit, or taking a dip in our small swimming pool. There are plenty of cozy spots around the premises to unwind.

During your time off, you can explore the South Luangwa National Park, and also there are some nice tourist activities like the Bush Spa and jewelry-making workshops. We have a very small town with 3 or 4 local places for a nice coffee or lunch. If you have time before or after your visit to us, there’s so much to see in Zambia, like Victoria Falls!

If our car is available, you are welcome to use it within Mfuwe; just cover the gas. Otherwise, local transport to town is cheap and only takes about 15 minutes to get there. It’s safe to travel alone. For getting to Muzanga Foundation in Mfuwe, you can fly to Lusaka and then catch a flight to Mfuwe, or take a local bus that runs daily, which takes about 12 hours. Driving or organising a pick-up is also an option and will take around 11 hours.
