We believe that safe transportation is a fundamental right. Everyone should have the opportunity to access essential services, education, work and social networks, regardless of their location or economic status.
In Zambia, we recognise that cycling is a popular mode of transportation, particularly in rural areas. However, one of the significant challenges faced by cyclists and pedestrians is the lack of road lighting infrastructure in combination with limited till no lighting on bicycles. Many roads in rural areas do not have lighting, which creates a hazardous situation, making it almost impossible for car drivers to see cyclists and pedestrians.
Through our “Visibility on the Bike” project, we aim to address this challenge. By working closely with local communities, we raise awareness about the importance of cyclist and pedestrian visibility. Together, we explore and implement strategies that can enhance visibility, reduce the risk of accidents, and create a safer environment for all road users.
One of our primary goals is to provide practical solutions that empower cyclists to enhance their visibility on the road. We believe in equipping individuals with reflectors and other non-battery-driven reflector options that can easily be added to their bikes. These reflectors serve as a simple yet effective means to increase visibility, making cyclists more noticeable to drivers.
Through our Muzanga method, we actively co-create with local communities. We listen to their voices, respect their expertise, and incorporate their insights into the development of safety information-sharing methods. By co-creating these strategies, we ensure that they are culturally relevant and effective within the local community. Through this collaborative process, we ensure that the distribution of reflectors and other visibility-enhancing tools are tailored to the specific needs and preferences of the community.
Local community members are at the forefront of spreading safety information to neighbouring communities. With their deep understanding of the local culture and communication channels, they play an important role in executing the chosen methods. This community-driven approach fosters ownership, empowers individuals, and maximises the reach and impact of our safety initiatives.
Join us in our mission to promote cycling safety and distribute practical reflector solutions that make a visible difference.
We believe that by investing in community-driven initiatives, we can empower people to improve their living conditions, build resilient economies, and create a better future for themselves and their children. We recognise that rural areas in Africa face unique challenges. Therefore, our approach focuses on addressing these challenges in a comprehensive and integrated way, by working with communities to identify their priorities, assets, and capacities, and to design context-specific solutions.
